The Mowing Habits That Separate Good Lawns From Struggling Ones

Everybody mows. Very few people mow in a way that helps the lawn. After years of cutting grass across Carroll County and Northwest Arkansas, here is what actually matters.

The one third rule

Never take more than a third of the blade in one cut. Cut a six inch lawn to four, not to two. Scalping shocks the grass, invites weeds into the gaps, and bakes the soil. If the yard got away from you, bring it down in stages a few days apart.

Sharp blades cut, dull blades tear

A dull mower blade rips grass instead of slicing it. Torn tips turn brown and the whole lawn takes on a grayish cast a few days after mowing. If your lawn looks worse three days after you cut it, your blade is the suspect. We sharpen ours constantly because it is the cheapest quality upgrade there is.

Change your pattern

Mowing the same direction every week trains the grass to lean and carves ruts into the yard. Alternate directions each cut. It is a small habit that keeps a lawn standing tall and striping clean.

Leave the clippings, most of the time

Clippings feed the lawn as they break down. Unless the grass was overgrown and the clumps are smothering it, let them lie. It is free fertilizer.

When it makes sense to hand it off

A mowing schedule sounds simple until June, when the grass grows faster than your weekends. Our weekly and biweekly accounts across Berryville, Green Forest, and Eureka Springs get consistent height, sharp blades, edges, and blown walks every visit, without anyone giving up a Saturday.
